“Don’t Override Safety Devices” in Chemical Engineering Progress (November 2020) reports that workers intentionally disable one-third of safety interlocks and similar devices. This is particularly dangerous because these devices make accidents impossible–e.g. a skid loader will not operate unless there are 35 or more pounds of pressure on the driver’s seat. If the driver is in the seat, he or she cannot be where the moving machinery would affect him. (The concept appears similar to the grip safety of the M1911 Automatic Colt Pistol, which prevents the weapon from firing at all unless the user is holding it.) If however people disable safety devices, then all bets are off.
